ITV Coronation Street star Sean Wilson breaks silence after return to soap mysteriously axed

Sean Wilson, best known for his role as Martin Platt in Coronation Street, has broken his silence following his unexpected exit from the ITV soap.

The actor took to social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, to share a cryptic message with fans after reports emerged that his hotly-anticipated return to the Cobbles had been scrapped.

Wilson posted an image of an illuminated ‘Love’ sign, accompanied by the caption: “Thanks for all the love xxx.”

This brief statement comes after reports emerged that Wilson had been axed from the show, despite plans for his character to return as part of Gail Platt’s (played by Helen Worth) exit storyline.

Martin, who was married to Gail and is father to David Platt (Jack P Shepherd), was set to make a comeback to the Cobbles after a brief return in 2018.

Wilson’s return to Coronation Street was initially announced with great anticipation. He was due to begin filming scenes on July 24, with a storyline featuring his on-screen son David shocked by his father’s unexpected return.

However, last month it was revealed that Wilson had stepped away from the show for “personal reasons” and his scenes would not be broadcast. This sudden departure came as a shock to both fans and those involved with the production.

A source told The Sun: “It has come as a complete and utter shock to everyone – and his sudden exit has rocked everyone involved with Corrie. Sean was loving his time on the show, and he was very popular on set.”

The circumstances surrounding Wilson’s exit remain unclear, with ITV declining to comment further on the situation.

Wilson’s social media post has garnered significant attention from fans, with many expressing their disappointment and support.

One X user wrote: “Ugh still disappointed we will not be seeing you on screen. Nice to still see you around on here though.”

Another added: “Mate! I’m gutted. So disappointed. Hope you’re ok my friend.” (sic)

The sudden nature of Wilson’s departure has fuelled speculation about the reasons behind it. Reports suggest that lawyers may now be involved in his exit.

According to The Mirror, Wilson was allegedly “rude” to staff upon his return to the show and was disappointed about not being included in Gail’s big exit storyline.

Some fans have called for an official statement from either Wilson or ITV to clarify the situation and prevent further rumours.

Wilson first joined Coronation Street in 1985 at the age of 20, portraying Martin for two decades until 2005. His character began as a school leaver working in Jim’s Cafe and studying at Salford Technical College.

Martin’s relationship with Gail, which began after her first husband’s murder, is considered by fans to be her most successful marriage. The couple’s David was born on Christmas Day 1990.

Wilson briefly reprised his role in 2018 before his character moved to New Zealand. Outside of acting, he has pursued a career as a chef, cooking in Michelin-starred restaurants and establishing his own cheese-making business, the Saddleworth Cheese Company.
