ITV Vera fans make plea as drama comes to emotional ending after 14 years: ‘Crying!’

Vera fans tuned into the ITV series one last time on Thursday as leading lady Brenda Blethyn bowed out of the role after 14 years.

The actress, 78, announced last year she’d decided to quit her role as the protagonist of the popular crime drama, and fans have since been on tenterhooks over the detective’s fate.

As she cracked one final case, the Geordie detective made an understated exit as she quietly retired.

The final scenes saw Vera peacefully walking away from her beloved career – alongside a dog she had seemingly adopted.

She had hinted she would be retiring in an earlier scene when she visited Chief Superintendent Khalon (played by Shobna Gulati), who assumed she was there to accept a promotion.

However, Vera explained the envelope she had in hand was “more about making way, m’am, and letting others fly.”

A moving flashback saw a young Vera expressing her desire to join the police to her father.

“The police is no place for a lass,” he shot back at her before Vera argued he was wrong.

“Am I? You best prove it then, pet,” Vera’s dad advised her.

In the present day, the iconic character packed up her office and silently left.

The next day, it seems her colleagues was still unaware as they arrived at the station and wondered where she was.

Joe Ashworth (David Leon) found a note from his boss addressed to him. It read: “Time to spread those wings, pet. You’ll be fine. X.”

Fans were quick to express their emotional response as several admitted they were “crying,” meanwhile others begged for a spin-off of the crime drama.

“Thank you to #Vera for that beautiful season finale, that had me, a whole a** adult, crying like a baby,” one penned.

“Whoever in #ITV decided to pull the plug on #vera needs a talking to – she’s at the top of her game fgs! Surely there’s more episodes in this drama yet?” another argued.

“Perhaps @ITV could do a spin off then with the team and #Vera just popping in occasionally in a senior role (wishful thinking),” someone else echoed.
