BBC Race Across the World star Freddie Brazier admits feeling ‘like a burden’ whilst discussing mum Jade Goody

Celebrity Race Across the World star Freddie Brazier, 19, opened up about the loss of his mother, Jade Goody, and admitted that he wasn’t good with dealing with his emotions – often feeling like a burden to his father, Jeff Brazier.

As the third leg of the trip kicked off, the youngster’s father asked his son: “If you could go anywhere to feel like you took some time for mum, where would it be?”

“To watch the sunset, I think that sounds really nice,” the 19-year-old expressed, leaving his father to agree: “If that will make you feel like you have done something special for her.”

TV personality Goody tragically died in 2009 after being diagnosed with cervical cancer the year before, with Freddie being just four when she died, while his brother Bobby Brazier, now 21, was five.

During tonight’s episode, Freddie opened up about his grief and explained: “My mum was Jade Goody, I guess some people know her as the Big Brother star. I lost my mum when I was four due to cervical cancer and that was on Mother’s Day which is really hard.

“I don’t really like showing my emotions, I don’t even really speak to my dad much about my mum either, I just avoid it. I prefer it to bottle it up. I don’t want to feel like a burden to him.

“A lot of my memories that I have of my mum have come from watching a documentary, YouTube clips, and newspapers, they are not my memories. I don’t really remember being held, yeah I don’t really remember being held by my mum.

“If I had more memories with her it would have made it a whole lot harder for me, but I think I would have rather that, than not really remembering the things that I had done with my mum.

“It is just life really and I have kind of accepted that.”

As they reached their halfway point to Salvador, the pair sat and watched the sunset together and paid tribute to Goody on Mother’s Day and headed to a famous beauty spot, with Freddie saying as they searched for it: “Maybe Mum’s pushing us in the direction of where we need to go.”

Fans of the show were left heartbroken at Freddie and left one X user to note: “I had met Jade Goody, twice. She was lovely. She would be so proud of Jeff & Freddie. I hope they both win this.”

“Wow! Freddie talking about his mum tonight is heartbreaking. You can see the hurt in his eyes knowing he doesn’t remember much but wishing he had so many more years with her. Gosh, he would be doing his mum so proud right now,” another added.

“One thing I think everyone can agree on is that in no way, will Freddie be a burden to his Dad,” someone else said before a fourth penned: “Freddie is breaking my heart lads.”

“Freddie mentioning his late mum Jade goody,” another expressed before a sixth commented: “Hearing Fred say he can’t remember being held by his mum has ended me.”

Last week Jeff left viewers in tears as he opened up about helping his sons after Jade’s death, and candidly said: “I think when the boys lost their mum I really doubled down on putting all of my time, effort, attention, focus on my children.

“I needed to be there, helping them to navigate whatever the future was going to look like for them given their loss. And I’m still playing that role.

“But yeah the more Fred does for himself, I know that he can start to push on in life.”
